Construction debris dumped on reserve land | BorneoPost Online ... Posted: 20 Sep 2011 07:55 PM PDT Posted on September 21, 2011, Wednesday MELAKA: The Melaka Solid Waste Management and Public Cleaning Corporation discovered piles of construction debris dumped in a reserved area near Pulau Melaka here. Its assistant director, Ir Zainuddin Abdul Samad said the debris was spread over a 0.6 hectare area and included wood chips, cement and what looked like chemical substance that could impact the surrounding environment and people. "The waste material is of great concern as it could destabilise the ecosystem if it leaks into the Straits of Melaka," he said after the joint cleaning operation undertaken by the Corporation, Southern Waste Management Environment Sdn Bhd and Melaka Historical City Council, at Melaka Raya Fasa 2, here today. "This is a seabirds' habitat with some endangered species as well and is protected by the Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department," he explained. "We treat such irreponsible acts very seriously and will request the local authorities to follow up on the matter," he added. — Bernama |
